New Girl Star Jake Johnson on Nick’s Big Episode and Feeling Protective of Zooey – Exclusive

The Fox hit comedy New Girl has so far managed to steer clear of super serious territory, but on an upcoming episode, it will toe the line between comedy and drama when Jess’s (Zooey Deschanel) roomie Nick (Jake Johnson) gets some unnerving news.

“There’s an episode where there's a health scare for my character that might be serious,” Jake revealed to Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview at the FOX TCA All Star Party. “My character doesn’t get insurance, obviously. So when I get hurt, I have to go to a gynecologist [who’s] Jess's friend. And she finds something in my body that needs to actually be checked out.”

For such serious subject matter, Jake thinks the episode strikes a good balance.

“It’s an interesting line,” he says. “The script was written by [consulting producer] J.J. Philbin, and I think it’s a really fine line, but I think it was really well done. I’m excited to explore Nick’s character and to see where it goes. I feel like with each episode, they’re giving him more stuff to do and fun things to do. So I’m excited for the journey of it.”

And if there was any frowning on set that day, it was quickly balanced out by a taping of an interactive online clip that lets you follow the character of your choice throughout the house — and includes a little dance number.

“I’m a terrible dancer,” admits Jake. “[Max] Greenfield was laughing so hard at me, that tears were coming out of his eyes. And that’s not a joke.”

“We went to a dance studio and had a choreographer and, like, rehearsed. I suck at it. Lamorne [Morris] is pretty good. Max was killing himself that he was bad, but he was pretty good. And Hannah was really good.”

But it’s not called New Girl for nothin’.

“Zooey's a singer, dancer, and really into it,” says Jake. “If you have ever watched her videos, she likes to dance a lot. And none of us want to be the guy dropping the ball for the team. So we’re all team players.”

The guys on the show can’t help but feel protective of their adorkable protagonist who’s currently going through a rough patch in her personal life. “I feel like we have been since the beginning because she’s the New Girl,” says Jake. “And the way the show is, and the way we all are, she’s our girl.”
