Nigel Lythgoe Reveals More Details About SYTYCD’s New 2-Hour Format
The cast and crew of So You Think You Can Dance spent this past weekend in Dallas, TX, searching for the next great dancer. Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, Lil’C, and SYTYCD producer Jeff Thacker sat down with Cheryl Callon from Theater Jones to spill the beans on Season 9 and the evolution of the reality competition.
Going into its 9th season, SYTYCD has been successful at integrating dance into mainstream culture. All four agreed in how significant this is for the art form. Jeff commented, “it gave dance a spotlight that it was missing for a few years.” But he differentiates it from shows like Dancing With the Stars. “One of the good things about our show is it's diverse and not based around one specific genre of dance ... it's like a box of chocolates, with something for everyone in it.”
The hottest SYTYCD topic as of late has been the new format. So what did Nigel have to say about losing the results show?
“We're going to have to build the results into the following week's show. Once America's voted, we'll have to let the performers know after they've danced another routine...the judges will decide who goes home based on America's vote [and the two routines].”
But Nigel promised we’ll see the return of All-Stars and group dances are here to stay, and there will be loads of great dancing.
For fans, Nigel warned, “We have a very packed show. It's two hours, so once it goes, don't close your eyes or you'll miss a lot.”
It sounds like Season 9 is gonna be one wild ride!
