Nigel Lythgoe Talks the Crazy So You Think You Can Dance Auditions & The New 2-Hour Format
Earlier this week the So You Think You Can Dance crew stopped by BAM in Brooklyn to audition a fresh crop of dancing hopefuls for the show’s upcoming ninth season.
Wetpaint Entertainment was on the scene to talk to Nigel Lythgoe about the new 2-hour format, the loss of the Results Show, and how the SYTYCD auditions have changed over the years.
“What’s been so great about this show is that we’ve not just met great dancers, we’ve met good characters,” Nigel told reporters.
“Somehow street dancing and formally trained dancing has come together, which has made things so much more exciting. The formally trained kids are learning to do hip-hop and the hip hop kids are starting to get a little more formal and it’s fused the two styles. It gets much better every year.”
“The whole thing changes in Season 9,” Nigel continued. “We’ve only got one show a week now. We’re fusing the results show in with the show itself, which means we’re always going to be a week later. So we’ll get to see the kids do two routines – the one they did the week before then this week’s routine knowing how America’s voted and by the end of the show, we’ll know who’s going home.”
“This morning I just saw a lady doing Russian folk dancing to a Chris Brown song. I feel like I’ve seen it all now!”
