So You Think You Can Dance

SYTYCD’s Mandy Moore Choreographs ”Shut Up & Dance” in Utah

While eager dancers across the nation prepped for the Season 9 auditions of So You Think You Can Dance, long-time choreographer of the show Mandy Moore headed out to Salt Lake City, UT to choreograph a piece on Odyssey Dance Theater for their February performance “Shut Up & Dance.”

Last week, Mandy was hard at work, creating 20 minutes of choreography on the talented dancers of ODT. “On the show, I have 90 seconds to make a choreographic statement. So it was an absolute luxury for me to take my time and let the music lead me through this,” Mandy told the Salt Lake Tribune.

In addition to having more time to stretch and showcase her choreographic wings, Mandy also expressed how different it is to choreograph for a live audience versus television. “The things the camera appreciates are not the same things a live audience appreciates,” she explained. “The camera takes something 3-D and turns it into something 2-D. So the camera likes movement that is very linear and sharp.”

The piece is inspired by music and dances from the 1940s, ‘50s and 6’0s. “It’s unique and will stand out from the rest of our rep,” said ODT’s Associate Artistic Director and Principal Dancer Eldon Johnson. He was impressed with Mandy’s professionalism and is excited to show Utah audiences the finished product.

ODT will perform Mandy’s yet to be titled piece at the Kingsbury Hall on Wednesday February 1st. For ticket information, click here.

“Shut Up & Dance” runs through February 11th and also features other favorite SYTYCDers, such as Tadd Gadduang (Season 8) and Ashleigh and Ryan Di Lello (Season 6).

It sounds like a killer run of shows!
