Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars Speculation: Why Did Alison Have a Secret Identity Named Vivian Darkbloom?

As we learned on Pretty Little Liars Season 2, Episode 18: “A Kiss Before Lying,” Alison (Sasha Pieterse) had a secret alter ego: an older brunette named Vivian Darkbloom. But is there more to this story?

We first see “Vivian” in a screen shot taken from “A”’s phone. The girls spot a fake driver’s license that fell out of Ali’s secret box, showing a girl that looks exactly like Ali but with brown hair.

Once Hanna (Ashley Benson) tells Spencer (Troian Bellisario) about the time she ran into a startled Ali at a hair salon, where the staff called her Vivian as she wore a brunette wig, Spencer puts her literary chops to good use and discovers the meaning behind Ali’s alias. Vivian Darkbloom, an anagram of Vladimir Nabokov, is a character from one of Ali’s favorite books: Lolita. Hanna even has Ali’s old copy.

Does Alison’s secret lead us any closer to figuring out who killed her? We already know that Ali had a penchant for older guys like Ian (Ryan Merriman), and that Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) was enraged by Ali’s desire for him — could Melissa have been on the hunt for this mysterious brunette named Vivian?

We also knew that Ali had dirt on Jenna (Tammin Sursok), which may have included evidence that Jenna had harassed her half-brother Toby (Keegan Allen). Could Ali have used her secret identity to obtain information only an adult could gain access to?
