Hunger Games Rumor Control! Who Was Up for the Role of Katniss, and Which Actor Was Told to Lose Weight?
We have six weeks to go before the highly-anticipated Hunger Games movie is released (March 23, we have it on our calendar), but the film’s stars, Jennifer Lawrence, (Katniss Everdeen) Josh Hutcherson, (Peeta Mellark) Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne) and director Gary Ross, recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter and served up some behind-the-scenes details on the most buzzed about movie of 2012.
The flick, based on Suzanne Collins’s Hunger Games trilogy — which was shot for $90 million (reduced to $78 million thanks to some nice tax breaks) — was filmed in rural North Carolina, where the actors had to contend with some 300+ wild bears that popped up whenever they smelled food.
Funny, this is starting to sound just like The Games!
While the film’s three stars may seem like perfect fits for their respective roles, each of the young actors was apprehensive about taking on such an important role.
“I thought about it a good three days," Jennifer Lawrence revealed. "It was very daunting to know that one 'yes' could change my life.”
Despite the enormity of the role, Lawrence maintains that her life hasn’t changed — at least not yet. “I have my family, my friends, my dog ... and I'm leaving the country a little. But I haven't changed my personal life.”
Liam Hemsworth sought advice from older brother Chris (aka Thor, and the super-sexy huntsman in Snow White and the Huntsman) who, at times, didn't hold back. “My brother Chris texted me before shooting and told me to lose weight. He said, 'It's called The Hunger Games, not The Eating Games!” Oh, snap!
And exactly how difficult was it to shoot in the arena? Josh Hutcherson dished, “I had to lie still in a riverbed for an hour and half while they did camouflage makeup and not move a muscle or it would mess it up when they shot.” Let us know if you need some company next time, Josh.
We’re psyched to see what the movie version of The Hunger Games has in store when it's released on March 23, 2012!
