New Girl star Zooey Deschanel had a tough time of it at her L.A.-area middle school. She tells the February 2012 issue of Allure (via New York Daily News), "Girls spit in my face. People were so mean to me. I'd cry every day." Yikes!
But things only improved for the quirky gal: She went on to attend an alternative high school, where Jake Gyllenhaal and Kate Hudson were among her classmates, and later enrolled at Northwestern University in Chicago. (She eventually dropped out to pursue acting.)
Of her decision to go to Northwestern, she says, "I was like, 'It'd be cool to have a traditional college experience.' Then I was like, 'Oh, but none of these people understand what's cool about me. My specialness is not appreciated in this place.'" Her "specialness" is certainly appreciated in Hollywood.
