Whitney Houston Was in Talks to Mentor American Idol 2012 Contestants

Whitney Houston was gearing up for a major televised comeback when she suddenly passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012. The legendary singer was reportedly in talks to join The X-Factor as a guest judge, and now, American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe says Whitney was also tapped to mentor Season 11 contestants on the hit talent competition.

On Sunday morning, Nigel tweeted, “What is even more shocking to me regarding the death of #Whitney is that only this Wednesday she responded positively to mentoring on #Idol.” Whitney’s epic ballads have long been Idol audition favorites, so it only makes sense for the pop icon to appear on the show as a mentor. Idol Season 3 winner Jennifer Hudson sang a tearful tribute to Whitney during the 54th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday. Additionally, Whitney had just wrapped filming the movie Sparkle with Idol alum Jordin Sparks.

During his Grammy coverage on the red carpet, Idol host Ryan Seacrest disclosed that the show execs are working on including a tribute to Whitney. “I was on the phone with American Idol producers. We are trying to figure out how we can go in and obviously pay tribute [to Houston] in some way and acknowledge the impact that she had on popular singers, popular music and young singers that are trying to make it. So we'll see.”
