Sea Lion Attacks Shakira, Singer Emerges With Scratches
Too bad Shakira doesn’t have a real She Wolf by her side, because the gorgeous pop star could have used the extra help over the weekend. The singer is currently on vacation in Cape Town, South Africa — but a recent quest to get up-close and personal with the local wildlife did not end well.
On Sunday, February 12, Shakira wrote on Facebook, “This afternoon I happened to see some sea lions and seals. I thought to myself how cute they were so I decided to get a bit closer than all of the other tourists and went down to a rock trying to pet them doing a baby talk while taking pictures... ”
Apparently South African sea lions don’t like baby talk, because one of the wet, hairy creatures quickly lashed out. “Suddenly, one of them jumped out of the water so fast and impetuously that it got about one foot away from me, looked me in the eye, roared in fury and tried to bite me. Everyone there screamed, including me.”
Unlike the tiny little penguins Shakira later posted a picture of on Twitter, sea lions can grow as big as 6-11 feet long and 400-2,000 pounds. No word on the exact size of Shakira’s animal attacker, but still... yikes!
Fortunately, the singer’s brother, Tony, “jumped over me and literally saved my life, taking me away from the beast.” Neither sibling suffered a bite from the beast, though they did both came out of the encounter with scratches on their arms and legs from fleeing across the rocks.
Lesson learned: When on vacation, don’t try to pet the local wildlife. Shakira’s hips don’t lie — neither do her hand wounds!
