How did a high school student get her hands on so much money? We've come up with a few theories:
She really was blackmailing Spencer's dad: Peter Hastings was pretty convincing when he promised Spencer that Ali had never blackmailed him. On the other hand, Peter Hastings was also pretty convincing for years when he pretended Jason was just the neighbor's kid. It might be that the simplest explanation is the right one this time.
She was blackmailing her own mom: The fact that the money was kept in a box along with Jason-related letters makes us think it's connected to his identity in some way. What if Ali was blackmailing her own mother with the information? It would be totally messed up, of course, but this is Ali we're talking about.
She was blackmailing the N.A.T club, or just Ian: Ali was clearly not afraid to play dirty with Ian (Ryan Merriman) and the N.A.T. club, so maybe she threatened to expose them if they didn't pony up some cash. Of course, that leaves some questions: Where would they get the money? And did Jason know?
"A" gave it to her: "A" seems to have unlimited resources, so it's possible the mysterious stalker gave Ali the money. Why? Maybe to frame her somehow, or maybe, just maybe, to shut her up if she actually managed to find out "A"'s identity.
Other illicit activities: Hey, it's Alison. We wouldn't put anything past her, not even dealing drugs, theft, or some other illegal activity that would earn her cash.
