What Did You Think of the Grey’s Anatomy/Private Practice Crossover Episode?

Grey's Anatomy Season 8, Episode 15: "Have You Seen Me Lately?" is here! Yep, the Private Practice/Grey’s crossover episode was this week and it was full of all sort of weird medical junk (and some emotional junk too, but we’ll get to that in a minute). Let’s get right to it!

On the Grey's Anatomy side: Callie (Sara Ramirez) is debating which Resident she should hand over her super-secret-and-super-awesome Oral Boards studying method. Ultimately, she decides to test Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) by seeing how she operates on a man who got his hand stuck in a meat grinder. (And thank you Shonda for that disgusting image that we will never be able to unsee.) Hold onto your hats: Meredith passes! Not a big surprise since everyone knows that Mer is one of the best Residents in the hospital, right?

Moving on, Mark (Eric Dane) and Jackson (Jesse Williams) are operating on Bailey’s (Chanda Wilson) former patient, which she isn’t too pleased about. Karev’s (Justin Chambers) intern Morgan faints in the OR and he learns that he’s the only jerk in the hospital who didn’t know that she was 24 weeks pregnant. Doctors eventually deliver Morgan’s baby prematurely and both appear to be doing fine, for now.

Now, for while we’re all here: Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) sister Amelia (Caterina Scorscone) travels up to Seattle Grace-Mercy West to rally support for a risky surgery she is performing on a patient (Erica [A.J. Langer] to Private Practice fans). At first Derek resists but eventually decides to help his sister and not doubt her just because of her addiction problems. The surgery hasn’t been performed by the time that the Grey’s-half of the episode ends but picks up in the PP hour. Derek and Amelia eventually perform the 90-second surgery successfully (and with 5 seconds to spare) but Erica experiences a blood clot during the surgery. Oh no! Don't worry, she survives, and causes us to cry into our hankies.

Back to Grey's: It was interesting to see Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) during their couples’ therapy session, but there was very little happening during their scenes aside from Sandra and Kevin flexing their acting chops. Yes, we know Owen resents Cristina for the abortion and yes, they really should have discussed this before they got married! We’ll have to wait until the next episode to get more Cristina/Owen drama that isn’t just recapping what we already know.

The crossover element didn’t really feel like a crossover. Amelia is the only person from Private Practice who made an appearance and Derek and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) are the only Grey’s people who travel over the 10 pm mark. Overall, it was one of the better episodes from this season because it felt like things were actually happening. There are weird medical problems, Callie and Bailey acting nuts, Avery finally growing some balls, and Karev realizing that being the hospital’s no. 1 grouch is not the cutest look.

Our rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars. What was your rating? Rate the episode below.
