Pretty Little Liars

Keegan Allen: It’s a ”Whole Different Toby” When He Returns on Pretty Little Liars – Exclusive

He’s ba-ack! After a noticeable absence, Toby Cavanaugh (Keegan Allen) returned to ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars last week, on the back of a motorcycle. It should be good news for those rooting for a reunion between Spencer (Troian Bellisario) and the boy she sacrificed to keep him out of harm’s way. But will Toby rush back into her arms? We’re not so sure…

Wetpaint Entertainment got a chance to talk to Keegan Allen about where Toby has been, why his return may not be everything Spoby shippers hoped for, and being constantly manipulated by the women of Rosewood.

Wetpaint Entertainment: You’ve been gone for a while. Where do you think Toby has been?

Keegan: Well, I think he has an agenda that he is trying to follow, so he's been doing something that I feel like he should have done a long time ago. It’s a necessary mission, I'll just say, for the show and for everyone involved in Rosewood.

Is this a mission that we're going to find out more about on Monday’s episode (Season 2, Episode 23: “Eye of the Beholder”)?

Kind of. You'll find out a little bit more about what he's been up to and what he is doing. And it's going to be real interesting. It's going to be a whole different Toby that comes back, and he does kind of revert back to that like person who doesn't trust anybody and doesn't really want to deal with anybody. But you'll see. It was a fun challenge to be a part of.

How much of the last few episodes has to do with Toby and his feelings for Spencer?

It's kind of a difficult thing for Toby when he finds out that she had a thing with Wren [Julian Morris]. And he's exploring — even though he really cares about her — a couple more aspects of his relationship to everyone in the town of Rosewood.

Time moves very slowly in Rosewood, but for the amount of time that Toby was gone Spencer certainly moved on fast with Wren.

I know. I know. Isn't that crazy? But I have to say, it was really respectful that they wrote that in a way where Wren didn't take advantage of Spencer [when] she was inebriated [in Season 2, Episode 21: “Breaking the Code”]. He kind of respected that Spencer does have strong feelings for Toby, and she was just kind of out of it. It was a nice little play on that.

There are obviously rabid Toby shippers out there. Do people come up to you in the streets and express their adoration for this imaginary couple?

Yes. A lot of people do. And it's always interesting because it's a fictitious world that I live in, so it does seem a little interesting to hear people's views on how they feel the relationship should go. And the writers always take the fans into consideration. They really do read into what the fans want and try to give more of that.

Do you feel like they belong together?

I do. I do think that they have a true love. It's really fascinating to see how this couple has blossomed from the sleuthing in the hotel room in Season 1 all the way up until now. And you're rooting for them, but in the same stance, you're like, “I kind of want to see what would happen if something went wrong. What would Toby do, or what would Spencer do to keep this love?” That keeps it interesting.

What about Jenna (Tammin Sursok)? Are we going to see her surgery play out?

We will find out what happened with the surgery. And you're going to see the relationship between him and Jenna. It's dramatically changed. There's always a sense of pity from Toby towards Jenna because Jenna's kind of gotten screwed over in Rosewood. So he's got that sense of pity, but yet, she's a really dangerous, really toxic, poisonous person.

Does he understand that he's being manipulated by her?

I think at this point Toby is smarter than anybody really gets. He understands a lot. He really does know when he's being manipulated and sometimes he'll go along with it to avoid confrontation. But recently, I think he has worked really hard to find more of himself. So that's why he left. He realizes the toxicity of both of these friendship and relationships. He’s a lot more wary now than he ever was before.

Will Toby become aware of what's threatening the girls in the next few episodes?

We're going to find out what happens with that. It's going to be so interesting because at this point every character is a suspect. There’s a story line that, once that gets revealed, is literally going to open up a whole new can of worms. It's mind blowing. When we find all that out, it's going to push the story more, and it will be revealed where Toby's place is in this whole crazy arrangement.
