Shonda Rhimes Weighs in on the Original Cast’s Contracts and Katherine Hiegl’s Potential Grey’s Anatomy Return
When it comes to the question of whether the remaining original Grey's Anatomy cast members — including Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) — will return next season, we suppose no news is better than bad news. At least, that's what tell ourselves to feel better about the utter lack of information out there about the cast's contract negotiations.
Recently, Grey's creator and general mastermind Shonda Rhimes told TV Guide that she still has "no idea" if Ellen and Patrick will be back. However, she did say that "everybody wants to come back," citing "[money] stuff" as the holdup. On the bright side, she's confident things will work out, though she has a backup plan if they don't.
Speaking of the original cast, what does Shonda think about Katherine Heigl's apparent burning desire to return to the show to wrap up Izzie's story? Well, she said it's "really nice to hear her appreciating the show," but added, "we are on a track we have been planning, and the idea of changing that track is not something we are interested in right now."
Things could shift in the future, but for now that sounds like a very polite "no way." Sorry, Izzie fans.
