Colton Dixon Calls Phillip Phillips the “Diva” of American Idol 2012
Top 13 of American Idol have been through a lot together, but they’re not all friends — at least not if you ask Phillip Phillips and Colton Dixon. The Season 11 finalists sat down with Zap2it and displayed their faux rivalry while discussing their upcoming Stevie Wonder performances.
When asked about their closest friend in the competition, the two were quick to name anyone but each other. “Not Colton,” said Phillip. “Probably Heejun. We’re all really close. Not Colton, though.”
Colton echoed Phillips sentiments and explained how he has bonded with his roommate, Jeremy Rosado. “We’re both Christian, so it’s been really cool... But yeah, it’s not Phillip.” He also teased that Phillip is a “diva,” which we find hard to believe.
Looking forward to tonight’s Stevie Wonder covers, the two opened up about the process of choosing their songs. Since Colton didn’t listen to the music legend while he was growing up, he struggled with the decision. “I really had to listen to his catalog and see what he had and what would fit me,” dished the 20-year-old.
As much as he’s trying to do Stevie justice, he also wants to make his rendition his own. “It’s a balancing act. You've got to make sure you don't change it too much and you've just got to appreciate what he's already done.” Although Colton’s excited about what he has come up with, he admits it has been a challenge. “Honestly, I think the pressure this week is harder... it's been rough this week.”
Phillip, on the other hand, chose a song easily. Still, he has to remind himself not to let his nerves affect him. “The crowd can be so loud,” he explained. “Last week, that was the first time I've had a live crowd that loud and big screaming for me.”
Both guys are ready, though. Phillip plans to go out there and just enjoy it. “Hopefully people will like it,” adds the cutie. “If they do, that's good, if they don't, that's okay.” His competitor Colton is going to “focus on the vocals” after a flashy performance last week. His goal is to have America connect.”
