Torchwood & Doctor Who Star John Barrowman Joins Shonda Rhimes’ Newest Show
Shonda Rhimes isn't exactly known for making geek-friendly genre shows, but she sure does love to cast cult TV favorites. Recently, Grey's Anatomyfeatured geek dream girl Summer Glau as the nurse Cristina (Sandra Oh) thinks Owen (Kevin McKidd) is cheating with, and now Shonda’s new show, Gilded Lilys, has scooped up a BBC sci-fi favorite.
John Barrowman is best known for his role as omnisexual, immortal, time-traveling alien fighter Jack Harkness. The character originated on the BBC's Doctor Who, and then moved to his own spin-off, Torchwood — a show that came to Starz for its fourth season last summer.
Apparently John, who grew up in Illinois, liked being back in America well enough, because he's sticking around American TV. According to TVLine, John has been cast as a member of the central family in Shonda's new ABC period show, Gilded Lilys. If you've missed the news, Lilys is about the opening of the first luxury hotel in NYC in the 1890s.
Jack Harkness was known for his torrid love affairs and being a shameless flirt with everyone, regardless of gender, age, or species, so we're sure John will fit right in to Lilys, which is supposed to feature all of the love, betrayals, rivalry, and scandal we've come to expect in Shondaland.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
