Unmasking “A”: Breaking Down Vivian Darkbloom’s Story

On Pretty Little Liars Season 2, Episode 18: “A Kiss Before Lying”, the girls discovered one of Alison’s (Sasha Pieterse) biggest secrets: she had an alternate identity named Vivian Darkbloom. Vivian was a bit older, with brown hair, and apparently she was friends with quite a few people in the town over from Rosewood. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) quickly realized this was a character from Lolita, and the name was an anagram of the author’s, Vladimir Nabokov.

But in an exclusive interview with Wetpaint Entertainment, showrunner Marlene King said to pay very close attention to the Vivian story line. Her exact words were, “I do think the Vivian Darkbloom story line is definitely a part of how we discover, unmasking ‘A.’”

So what do we know about Vivian?

Driver’s license. We first caught a glimpse of her when the Little Liars found a fake Driver’s License made for Vivian in Alison’s secret box, which showed a girl that looked exactly like Ali, only with brown hair.

Brown wig. Hanna (Ashley Benson) realizes that she once saw Alison wearing a brunette wig in a hair salon her mom sent her to. Ali told Hanna that she just felt like being somebody else once in a while, and made her keep the alias between them.

Her trail. In Alison’s copy of Lolita, the Little Liars find a claim ticket. They track it down to a pawn shop, where “Vivian” once pawned a red jacket, which has stayed in the store for over a year. Inside the pockets of the jacket is a phone number. They call the number and initially hear a girl’s voice telling them there’s no one named Vivian there. But a man calls them back, asking to meet up.

Jonah. The Little Liars agree to meet this man, named Jonah, who tells them that Vivian owes him a lot of money. In exchange for her debt, he gives them an address, which turns out to be an abandoned FWL Law Firm, which Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) used to intern for.

Duncan. When Aria wore “Vivian”’s red coat, Duncan thinks she’s Vivian. In Season 2, Episode 22: “Father Knows Best,” Duncan tells Aria that Vivian used to love flying in his plane with him because that was where she was her true self, unencumbered by what other people thought, and other mysteries.

Doll Hospital. In Season 2, Episode 24: “If These Dolls Could Talk”, the Little Liars discover that Vivian came to the doll hospital looking for the person who sent her the voodoo doll. Though of course, this was really Ali, dressed as Vivian.

Why did Alison go around pretending to be someone else? And if it was just for fun, why would she use this identity to do investigative work, and go through the trouble of getting a fake ID?

If Vivian is one of the keys to finding out who “A” is, we think the primary clues are the fake ID, the FWL law firm (where “A” supposedly sent texts from), and the doll hospital. How do you think they’re all connected?

Find out who “A” is on the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 finale on Monday at 8 pm ET/PT on ABC Family.
