Shonda Rhimes: It’s the Right Time for MerDer to Move in to the Dream House

Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) weren't too happy on Grey's Anatomy Season 8, Episode 17: “One Step Too Far,” but by the end of the season the shippers will get a MerDer moment they've been waiting for: The couple will finally move in to their dream house!

Showrunner Shonda Rhimes recently told TV Guide about writing that momentous moment.

Well, first thing's first: It's not actually a momentous moment in her head. "I don't know if it's as big a moment for me as it's turned out to be for the fans," she explained. "There were many times where we were like, 'Oh, we should finish the house now.'"

However, even if they didn't see it as as important as some fans do, Shonda and the other writers had the good sense to not finish the house when it "just didn't feel quite right."

"It does feel right to deal with it and talk about it and have it be done at the end of Season 8 when Meredith is graduating from being a resident," Shonda concluded.

Getting to see Meredith and Derek actually enjoy the fruits of their labors is just one more reason we hope Ellen and Patrick come back for Season 9!

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
