One important thing to keep in mind: In the original Pretty Little Liars book series, “A” turned out to be Mona, followed by a few more “A”s as time went on. Showrunner Marlene King has stated repeatedly that “A” on the TV show is not who it is in the books. But since there were multiple “A”s in the books, and we can’t be sure which one she is referring to, let’s take a closer look at Mona just in case.
Hated Alison. In the Pilot, Aria (Lucy Hale) has a flashback to the day when she and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) spotted Byron Montgomery (Chad Lowe) hooking up with his student. But the flashback started with a very nerdy, bespectacled Mona trying to get their attention. Ali’s reaction was to run away and laugh at her. Slowly we saw that, after Alison died, Mona had social-climbed her way up to Ali’s old spot in the popular crowd, taking formerly chubby Hanna (Ashley Benson) with her. And boy does she cherish her place on the social pyramid.
Bad Seed. Early in Season 1, we also discover that Mona has a bad habit of shoplifting — but never getting caught because she’s so good at it. Interesting, considering how good “A” is at stealing things from the Little Liars’ houses (Mr. Hastings’ gun), and planting things as well (Ian’s (Ryan Merriman) phone in Spencer’s (Troian Bellisario) purse; the box of creepy dolls).
Technical skills. We doubt we were the only ones whose eyebrows shot up when Mona started hacking into the Vice Principal’s computer in Season 2, Episode 19: "The Naked Truth". If she knows her way around a high-security system like the school’s grading data, then surely she would know how to send so many blocked texts from “A,” upload that NAT club tape, and how to text from that old building that used to be FWL Law Firm.
Multiple phones. After Hanna lost it and threw her cell phone into the sink in Season 2, Episode 22: “Father Knows Best”, Mona came to the rescue with a back-up phone. She claimed it was just an old one, but who really hangs on to their old, junky phones? Especially a crafty girl like Mona, who would know how to sell it for more shopping money. “A” has a funny way of getting his or her hands on phones, too.
“A” Contacts Her. Isn’t it a little convenient that “A” has been very strict about contacting only the Little Liars for nearly two whole seasons, and suddenly, “A” randomly decides to start threatening Mona in public places? There are so many other people we can imagine “A” reaching out to in order to hurt the Little Liars — Toby (Keegan Allen), Ezra (Ian Harding), Caleb (Tyler Blackburn), for example — so why innocuous little Mona?
Do you think Mona’s a high-priority suspect? Or do you believe Marlene, who says Mona is not an option?
Find out who “A” is on the Pretty Little Liars Season 2 finale on Monday at 8 pm ET/PT on ABC Family.
