AMC recently issued a statement explaining that the poster's image "in no way references actual events." Now Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner has taken the response a step further, accusing journalist of being the ones misappropriating the memory of 9/11.
"I think it’s an excuse for journalists to show that picture again," Matthew told Salon, referencing "The Falling Man." "I do, I think they’re exploiting 9/11."
He went on to explain that the image in the poster has been part of the Mad Men credits since day one (which, as every fan knows, is true), and he added that, tragically, "a businessman falling out of a window is a symbol that far precedes that event."
"What I see are journalists looking for a story, going and confronting these 9/11 victims," he said.
While we are generally on Mad Men's side here — we understand why the image has negative associations, but it seems unlikely that it was intentionally evoking 9/11 — we would like to point out that this issue seemed to originally come not from journalists going out and talking to 9/11 victims, but from NYC bloggers expressing their gut reactions to the campaign.
