With the first episode of Mad Men Season 6 (Season 6, Episodes 1 &2: “A Little Kiss”), Megan Draper (Jessica Pare) has instantly become the most polarizing character on the show. The question is: Which side are you on?
As we pointed out in our recap, Megan comes off as glamorous, immature, naive, and free-spirited all at once. She’s also ambitious and brave. As Don Draper’s (Jon Hamm) second wife, Megan is a striking change from Betty (January Jones). In many ways, she’s a breath of fresh air — confident, outspoken, overtly sexual, a working woman, and she parents Don’s three children with a casual, loving gracefulness.
On the other hand, she can be wildly unnerving. Her “sex kitten” performance at Don’s surprise 40th birthday party was both inappropriate and, at times, crass. She has the power to seduce (men and women alike), but doesn’t seem to have any control over that power, the way Joan (Christina Hendricks) does.
Then again, she has one major advantage: the knowledge of Don’s fake identity, and the full story on Dick Whitman.
She is maddening because we want to be like her, and despicable because we want everything she has. When it comes to Megan Draper, which side of the very thin line between love and hate do you fall on?
