Is Anne Hathaway’s 500-Calorie-a-Day Starvation Diet for Les Miserables Safe? (UPDATE)
Anne Hathaway will play working class woman Fantine in Les Misérables. For those of you who need a refresher on the classic tale: Fantine dies — that is, after she turns to prostitution, develops a serious illness, and grows seriously emaciated. According to a source for The Daily Mirror, Anne’s “fit and healthy, almost slightly chubby” frame isn’t believable for a starving factory worker.
The Mirror reports Anne has been ordered to shed 16 pounds in the next 15 to 20 days. Because of the film’s shooting schedule, there’s little time for Hathaway to go about such huge weight loss in a healthy way, so she’s limiting herself to just 500 calories a day, or what some people call a “starvation level diet.” (FYI: A normal female’s daily caloric intake is in the range of 2000 - 2400 calories, so Anne is going to be feeling mighty hungry and dazed, among other things.) According to The Mirror’s insider, “Anne knows the risk of such an extreme diet and will undergo weekly medical sot make sure everything is still functioning as it should.”
Someone read all those ridiculous complaints about Jennifer Lawrence being “too curvy” for The Hunger Games.
Update: "The story is a huge exaggeration," Hathaway's rep Stephen Huvane told The Huffington Post, adding that Anne is eating more than 500 calories a day.
