5 Reasons Elena and Damon Need to Get Together in Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries
Want to know the reason #PoorElena rarely trends on Twitter? It’s because she has two hottie brothers to choose from! Sure, she lives in the deadliest town in America, but Elena (Nina Dobrev) is in close proximity with some of the best-looking men on the planet, and they’re both in love with her. Elena Gilbert problems.
While she spent the first two season of The Vampire Diaries in the arms of Stefan (Paul Wesley), a piece of her heart has belonged to Damon (Ian Somerhalder) for quite some time. Not that we’re swearing our allegiance to Team Delena, but we see some valid reasons why it’s high time those two got together. You’ll find our argument below — but don’t worry, Stelena fans. We’ve got you covered with five reasons Elena and Stefan need to reconcile.

Damon is too hot to handle. Is it shallow? Yes. Is it true? Double yes. Stefan is hot, but Damon is smolder-ific. From his intense, sea-colored eyes to his glorious chest, Damon’s just otherworldly gorgeous. Frankly, Elena has shown remarkable restraint by not jumping his bones before now.
He’s changed. Whether he was snapping Jeremy’s (Steven R. McQueen) neck or staking Lexi (Arielle Kebbel), Damon has a history of murdering those close to the people he loves the most. Now, when his feelings get hurt, he’s more apt to sink into a drunken stupor and find a blonde to hook up with. Okay, he’s not perfect, but it’s baby steps.
Stefan’s not all there. We’ve seen hints of Stefan’s coming redemption, but he still loses it a bit at the site of blood, he still lashes out at Elena for caring about him, and he still hasn’t forgiven himself for his Camp Klaus summertime activities. The last time he fell off the wagon, it took Lexi a decade to get the younger Salvatore cleaned up and back on track. In Mystic Falls time, it’s only been a few months since he was vivisecting coeds with Klaus. He needs a little time to recover from that.
Damon’s been devoted. Stefan did an incredibly noble thing by sacrificing himself to save Damon — but Damon was there to pick up the pieces when his brother left. Regardless of Stefan’s motives for distancing himself from Elena, it was Damon she ran back to every time he rejected her. And it’s not only Elena that Damon was loyal to. He kept his mitts off his brother’s girl until she said they had to let go of him. She gave up on Stefan, but Damon never really did. He kissed Elena knowing he’d feel guilty about it, but he still felt guilty about it.
Taste test. With the trio hurtling towards a dramatic conclusion in the Season 3 finale — executive producer Julie Plec said the triangle will come to “a head” — Elena can’t really make an informed decision unless she tests drives her feelings for Damon. Sure, cuddling in bed and having one hot kiss on a porch is great, but these two have no idea if they’re all style and no substance. And they won’t… until they really let themselves be together.
