Grey's Anatomy

Breaking Down the Grey’s Anatomy Season 8, Episode 19 Sneak Peek: Cristina Takes Control (VIDEO)

As difficult as we predict it will be to watch Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) go over his affair in excruciating detail on this week’s Grey's Anatomy (Season 8, Episode 19: “Support System”), we’re also strangely excited.

Cheating is a huge deal on Grey’s, mainly because it so rarely happens among our main characters. Similar to the way Sex and the City producers’ decision to have Carrie Bradshaw cheat on her boyfriend risked alienating Carrie fans who didn’t approve, Grey’s is taking a big risk by having Owen cheat on Cristina. Will fans ever be able to forgive him, even if Cristina does? Can we stand behind this marriage, having lost faith in one half of it?

In any case, we see Owen recreating his initial meeting with the blonde he cheats on Cristina with, in this sneak peek from Episode 19. He’s drinking hard at a familiar bar, when the blonde next to him asks, “You do that every day?” He appreciates the camaraderie and says that no, “they kind of frown on alcoholism in my line of work.”

Blondie takes a big swig of her own drink, which apparently impresses the visibly inebriated Owen. He thanks her for the drink (did she pay?) and says, “I gotta get home.” To Cristina, to his wife, to his marriage. Any of those qualifiers would have done just fine.

The fateful moment comes when she drowsily and flirtily begs him, “One more...” That’s when we cut to poor, exacting Cristina, lying on their bed, demanding to hear every single detail about Owen’s affair. Owen looks exhausted, but really, who cares? This is Cristina’s game, and he’ll play by her rules.

We like seeing Cristina toying with Owen from a position of control, but we’re nervous that, at the end of this grueling process, she’ll crack. Then again, spoilers about the return of “the old Cristina” might suggest that she’ll get through this episode without any kind of breakdown. She wants the facts, and can leave the emotional whirlwind behind.
