Eliminated Voice Contestant Erin Martin Blames Cee Lo Green for Her Early Exit
Not to anyone’s surprise, the overconfident and image-focused former model Erin Martin was in Team Cee Lo’s bottom three on The Voice last night.
Critics, viewers, and even fellow contestants questioned Erin’s relative success on the show when she beat out fan-favorites The Shields Brothers in an unusual battle round pairing.
The singer has claimed she offers “the full package,” and even said her live show performance would be “Grammy worthy," but after last night’s elimination (April 10), the sexy songstress seems to be changing her tune.
In a red-carpet interview with People Magazine, Erin talked about her underwhelming performance of The Bangles' “Walk Like An Egyptian” in Monday night’s episode.
"You have to [play a character]," she said. "I'm contractually obligated to do that. There is nothing you can really do. I was choreographed. They put this outfit on me. They chose the song. You don't really have control over what happens. You kind of just deal with it."
Erin took the stage wearing an oversized Egyptian collar, wig, and two-piece metallic ensemble. She arrived in a chariot dragged by shirtless male dancers.
"It's not all about showmanship. Art needs to be nurtured," she said to Zap2It. "I think [Cee Lo] can learn a lesson from me being an artist, that he needs to nurture artists and let their voice shine."
Erin, who considers herself to have more of a Billie Holiday/Corinne Bailey Rae sound, sang “Hey There Delilah” by The Plain White T’s in her blind audition and “What’s Love Got to Do With It” by Tina Turner in the battle rounds.
“I'm just really looking forward to going back to my coffee shop and playing my guitar and putting out records that are true to myself,” she said.
Cee Lo hasn’t acknowledged Erin’s comments, but did talk to reporters about her exit on the post-show red carpet.
“Erin makes me laugh. She’s so, so unique and so wonderfully strange, like me,” he said. “I'll miss having that side of myself around.”
