Get the Lowdown on J.K. Rowling’s New Novel, The Casual Vacancy

Fans of Harry Potter may not be as enchanted with author J.K. Rowling’s newest book, which aims to bewitch an adult audience.

In The Casual Vacancy, the British scribe trades in the world of magic for small-town politics, setting the novel in an idyllic English village called Pagford. Things couldn’t be more perfect upon first glance, but first impressions can be deceiving.

Little, Brown, the publisher of the book, succinctly describes the tensions within the fictional town on its website: “Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils... Pagford is not what it first seems.” Things come to a head when councilman Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly (the book’s “casual vacancy,” no doubt), and the townspeople vie for his seat.

Portrayed as “blackly comic, thought-provoking, and constantly surprising,” The Casual Vacancy is a far cry from the epic adventure and wizardry of Harry Potter. Will Rowling’s fans follow her from Hogwarts to Pagford when the novel hits shelves on September 27?
