DWTS Season 14, Week 5 Sneak Peek: Latin Week & Debut of Dance Duel!
Let’s just try and forget the dramas of Dancing With the Stars’ Rock Week, shall we? It’s time to shake it like a Polaroid picture on Season 14, Week 5’s Latin Week. The nine remaining couples will dance either the Salsa, Samba or Argentine Tango.
This week also marks the official debut of the Dance Duel to save one of the couples in the bottom two. The competitors have mixed feelings about that new twist, which takes a bit of the power away from the voters. "I like the viewers having the power,” Cheryl Burke told On the Red Carpet, “but we don't like [the Dance Duel], obviously, because it's more work for us. We have to learn two dances now … ‘cause the bottom two couples next week have to fight for their spot, so you have to do like a quick Cha-Cha or a quick Jive." Maria Menounos likes idea of fighting for survival in the Dance Duel. Her partner Derek Hough added to OTRC, "The thing I do like about it is it gives a little bit more control to the show to keep someone in that's a little more ... capable, I should say." As the reporter noted, this comes from a pro who is dancing with a celeb who gets high scores. Maria & Derek — and William & Cheryl, for that matter — probably don’t have that much to worry about.
Read on for more of the couples’ plans for Latin Week.
"Where am I going to take you this week?" Mark grinned at Katherine. "We have Argentine Tango, so it's more about being seductive and passionate. So, you know, I'll figure it out."
"This is a dance that I've always wanted to learn," Katherine said. "Yeah, she's really excited about this one," Mark said. "This is her favorite dance. We're allowed to do lifts and we're going to tell a really passionate story and just keep it straight-edge and go for it."
Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd, Argentine Tango "I think he's going to have a lot of fire and a lot of passion," Peta said. "We have the Argentine Tango, so I really think he's going to step up to the character and we'll have a good connection." Donald is ready for the challenge.
Jaleel White & Kym Johnson, Samba "We have Latin Week so that's going to be a lot of fun in the ballroom,” Kym said. What makes Jaleel so Latin? "Well, he's got that great booty he can shake,” Kym said. “So we'll definitely be using that to our advantage."
"I'm exposed! I'm exposed!" Jaleel said. "We're doing the Samba," Kym said, "and it's all about rhythm and shaking the booty.” She turned to Jaleel. “So I think it's going to be right in your wheelhouse."
Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower, Salsa "We have the Salsa next week," Chelsie said, "so we are going to work on refining his Salsa technique. We are going for 10s next week. We don't want to be in the bottom two EVER AGAIN, so we're going for 10s."
"The bottom two is not the place to be, man, that's not where you want to party," Roshon said. "I'm going to make sure that I do all I can and work as hard as I can to stay out of there."
William Levy & Cheryl Burke, Argentine Tango William and Cheryl didn’t talk to OTRC about Latin Week — which is weird since he is “The Latin Brad Pitt” or whatever — but Cheryl did mention their Week 5 dance in her rather defeated OK! Magazine blog after Monday's show, "Tonight was just not good. I guess some stuff just happens. I don’t think there is going to be a next week, but we’ll find out. It is Latin week so it will be hopefully his week. And if we make it through, we will have the Argentinean tango which is really sexy and should be good for him." Of course you made it through, Cheryl, William is on the cover of People magazine. He is an anointed star. And Bruno Tonioli would set the ballroom on fire if his eye candy left. Cheryl is a major Argentine Tango buff, so this could be their best dance yet.
Gavin DeGraw & Karina Smirnoff, Samba or Salsa Gavin and Karina talked to OTRC about their Latin Week dance without ever revealing the specific dance style. "We actually started just now, about 10 minutes ago," Karina said after the Tuesday Results Show, while Gavin still looked like Jack White of The White Stripes. "We were creating outfits. He's going to be very colorful, showing some skin, embracing the Caribbean lifestyle."
"I think that Karina wants me to dress up like a tropical bird,” Gavin said, “and I'm going to try to avoid that as much as possible." But he's definitely going to have to get a George Hamilton tan, she said.
Maria Menounos & Derek Hough, Salsa Maria tweeted on unlucky Friday the 13th, “salsa is going well...except for the fact that I had a small mishap.well..maybe not small.tune in to #dwts Mon night for the latest...Oy!” Please, not another injury! Derek added, “I'm bringing bubble wrap and a helmet today for Maria. She had an epic face plant yesterday during salsa.”
Melissa Gilbert & Maksim Chmerkovskiy, Salsa As of early Friday afternoon we were just glad to hear that Melissa had returned to the studio for some “gentle” rehearsal time with Maks. When Maks post his TV Guide blog, he should be able to share more details on the dance style and other things they are doing. Watch this space! *Update*Maks did post his blog later on Friday and shared a lot about how they are taking things easier because Melissa is still recovering from "a fused vertebrae in her neck area." But he didn't specifically say what dance they are doing. Guess we'll have to wait for a tweet! *Update* We have a tweet, from Melissa, which seems to have been inspired by her French boyfriend, "Bonjour twitterville. Je suis prêt à danser la salsa sexy avec @MaksimC!"
Gladys Knight & Tristan MacManus, Samba Gladys and Tristan weren’t there for a post-Results Show interview with OTRC and Gladys has yet to tweet anything about her dance style. *Update* Gladys tweeted late Friday afternoon, "Hey Ya’ll !! We are doing the Samba on MONDAY!! #DWTS!! Have a wonderful weekend!! Be safe if out there!!"
