Pretty Little Liars

Pretty Little Liars Burning Question: Was Maya’s Death Supposed to Parallel Alison’s?

Maya's (Bianca Lawson) shocking death on Pretty Little Liars Season 2, Episode 25: “UnmAsked” was a totally new twist on the show — but at the same time, the circumstances of the discovery gave us a little deja vu.

As a clever fan recently pointed out to PLL showrunner Marlene King, "Emily found out [about] Maya's and Alison's death [in] the same way." The fan asked Marlene if she realized there was a similarity between the scenes.

Marlene replied, "Yes, that was intentional."

Interesting. Very interesting. Marlene has previously said that the Season 3 premiere ("Season 3, Episode 1: “It Happened ‘That Night’”) will have a number of parallels to the PLL pilot. We wonder if this is a hint at parallels in the plot, too. Maybe the same person who killed Alison killed Maya!

On the other hand, maybe it's just a cool cinematic trick that's meant to be more thematic than literal — Maya's death is the beginning of a new chapter in the PLL world, in the same way that Ali's death was the beginning of the story we've watched for the last two years.

What do you think it means? Weigh in at our Facebook page or in the comments below!

Catch an all-new Pretty Little Liars when Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, June 5 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC Family.
