Claire Danes Talks Playing a Bipolar Character on Homeland
Hollywood veteran Claire Danes first caught our attention playing Angela Chase on the short lived series, My So-Called Life, and since her days on the fan-favorite Danes has racked up an impressive list of film and television credits.
Most recently, the 33-year-old beauty can be seen on the gritty drama, Homeland, playing bipolar CIA agent, Carrie Mathison. Homeland — set to begin its second season this fall — has quickly become a favorite of fans and critics alike.
However, portraying a bipolar character who also happens to work in one of the U.S. government’s most respected agencies, while no easy feat, is incredibly interesting to Danes.
She tells Capitol File magazine, “Acting and psychology are not unrelated. They’re both examinations of the human spirits…I’m really curious as to how people work, particularly people with certain conditions that make them different to the rest of us.”
On the season one finale, Carrie suffered what her family and co-workers saw as a psychotic breakdown — leading her to seek memory altering electric shock treatment — when in reality she had just begun solving patterns of highly-dangerous terrorists, and piecing together the pieces of a very complicated puzzle.
As for how she researched her character’s complicated psyche, Danes reveals that she watched YouTube videos of manic-depressives in manic states to get a feel for what they were going through.
“I think they feel a strong urge to communicate their experiences, and the Internet is a great way to do that,” she says.
One thing we know is that Danes’s gut-wrenching performance is bound to earn her plenty of accolades come awards season!
