Vampire Diaries’ Ian Somerhalder on His Animal Sanctuary and Damon’s Post-Motel Confusion — Exclusive

Last Sunday was Earth Day, and Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore) did his part by kicking off the “Let’s Get Dirty” campaign — a one-day, statewide clean-up of California. To celebrate the success, Ian and his charity, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, held a swanky dinner called the Influence Affair on April 21.

The event was “an intimate and exclusive gathering of tastemakers, influencers, and celebrates,” according to the invitation. When Wetpaint Entertainment spoke with Ian at the event, we were curious what the ISF would tackle next, now that he’s helped make such an impact on California’s environment. We only got a short time to chat with the busy guy, but he told us he loves us, so everything else was just gravy.

Ian Somerhalder: I love you guys! You are awesome to us, and we really appreciate it so thank you.
Wetpaint Entertainment: You’re very welcome Ian! Let’s talk Vampire Diaries and ISF!

Wetpaint Entertainment: What does the motel makeout in this week’s episode mean for Damon?
Ian Somerhalder: Well, I think it really throws him. So I think it’s going to breed a lot of confusion and it’s going to turn a lot of heads.

Do you think it’s time for Elena to make a choice between the brothers?
Hell yes! Choose!

Will she by the finale?
Yeah, make a choice, you know? You ladies string us along...

What can you tell us about what ISF is working on right now?
This event has been so phenomenal and it’s taken a lot out of the volunteers and the staff. Are you guys shaking? [Editor’s note: It was very cold outside on the carpet!] You need to bring warm things; you’re going to look beautiful either way.

This event has taken a lot of time and energy and effort and it’s been incredible. Now what this is going to allow us to do is our next giant project, this ISF Farm. It’s going to be basically an animal sanctuary with a youth education facility. Facility sounds so institutional, like a youth education camp and that will eventually become a green, sustainable agricultural farm. So building a non-wood pulp, tree-free paper industry and it’s going to start on this farm. It’s going to teach kids everything from compassion to animal protection to bio-diversity protection to green sustainable agricultural practices and how to live off the land and live harmoniously with the land. It’s going to be an incredible project, it’s going to take a lot of effort and it’s going to be probably one of the most rewarding things that any of us have seen or done.

Where will the farm be?
It’s going to be in Louisiana.
