The Voice’s Jesse Campbell on His Elimination: Christina Aguilera Promised to Fight For Me

It’s been more than two weeks now, but it seems that America is still shocked by Christina Aguilera’s decision to eliminate fan-favorite Jesse Campbell from The Voice.

He certainly is.

In a recent interview with The Huffington Post, Jesse admitted that when he was standing on stage waiting to hear who was getting voted off in the instant elimination, he was overcome with emotion, but not in the way you’d think.

“I’m thinking, ‘Wow. This part of the journey is over for someone,'" Jesse told the site.

He was so convinced of his immunity, that his thoughts were consumed with being supportive of whomever Christina let go.

“I didn’t think that my coach, who said that she would fight for me, would send me home,” Jesse said. “I felt as though she would continue to honor her words … and to me that wasn’t a fight-for-me type of decision.”

Tons of fans criticized Christina for the decision, saying Jesse was the strongest contestant in the competition.

Unbeknownst to viewers, Jesse’s final performance of Beyonce’s “Halo” was almost a disaster. He recently admitted that he forgot the words to the popular song moments before taking the stage.

“For whatever reason, I got so nervous that I forgot the words to the song. I was up there like, ‘Oh my god! What is this?’" he said.

“I turned around to see if there was anybody who could help me remember the words and I thought, ‘Jesse, what are you doing? Relax. Trust. Even if you have to hum it until you remember it, just do it. Let it be,’” Jesse said.

“So I turned around and just as I raised my hand up, I said, ‘God, please help me to remember the words,’ and then, oh my god, I remembered the first word!”

Fortunately, he was able to remember the words and give a strong final performance. Though he’s still confused about his early exit, he still appreciates Christina’s role on the show.

“I don't know why she chose to send me home, but I respect her as a person and as an artist,” Jesse said. “They asked her to be a coach for a reason and I do my best not to make assumptions so therefore, I don't have any regrets.”
