If you’re not acquainted with The Vampire Diaries promo videos from Canada, then let us assure you, they are very spoiler-filled. The preview for Season 3, Episode 21, “Before Sunset” is no exception, and it shows Alaric (Matt Davis) like we’ve never seen him before.
Now that Alaric is officially an Original living on borrowed time, he is manically focused on killing Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and his siblings. The vampire hunter will go to extraordinary lengths to get the job done, and it doesn’t look there’s a trace of the old ‘Ric left. Case in point, the promo shows Alaric has kidnapped Caroline (Candice Accola) in order to lure Elena away from the rest of her friends. Just what his motive is isn’t clear at this point, but don’t expect to see Mystic Falls’ resident drunk return to his sarcastic self anytime soon.
"He's pretty clearly a badass vampire killer with a pretty magnificent, deadly, and unburnable stake," executive producer Julie Plec says, according to Zap2It. "I definitely think he's going to be a conflict-provider; not to make it an understatement. He's not going to be the friendliest version of Alaric we've ever met. He's pretty hardcore, which is going to be equally exciting and devastating, because he's one of our heroes who is no longer one of our heroes.”
Alaric is a fan favorite, but don’t get your pitchforks out just yet. Zap2It also reports that an ambiguous ending in the Season 3 finale leaves room for the day drinker to make guest spots throughout Season 4 — even if Matt Davis’s new show, Cult, does get picked up.
With Esther (mostly) dead, there’s still potential to reverse part of her spell — hopefully the part that says ‘Ric is a mortal vampire. Frankly, the history teacher having a set of fangs isn’t the worst thing in the world.
