Community Season 3’s “Fulfilling” 90 Minute Finale: Is This a Good or Bad Sign?
In case you missed the news, NBC recently announced in a press release that Community's Season 3 will come to a close with a super sized, 90-minute Community extravaganza on May 17.
A little bizarrely, the three episodes will bookend 30 Rock's Season 6's finale — Community Season 3, Episode 20: "The first Chang Dynasty" will air in the normal 8 p.m. timeslot, followed by 30 Rock. Community will be back at 9 p.m. for Episode 21: "Introduction to Finality" and Episode 22: "Digital Estate Planning."
The question on many fans' minds is if this is a good or bad sign for Community's potential renewal. The cult hit is constantly on the bubble, and it's possible to read this odd bit of scheduling either way.
On one hand, it's easy to imagine that this is NBC's way of giving the show a last hurrah before offing it; a final night of fun for the fans before our beloved and misunderstood show is taken from us, forever. On the other hand, building an entire night around Community in the middle of May sweeps may indicate that the network has faith in the show — faith that could translate to another season of wacky Greendale adventures.
Either way, the finale should leave us satisfied, according to Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley). Yvette told E! that "it's a very fulfilling finale," adding that it "serves as [both] a cliffhanger and closure if need be."
