Who Is Brennan’s Father on Bones? Everything You Need to Know About Max Keenan (Ryan O’Neal)

Give a warm welcome back to Grandpa Max (Ryan O'Neal), aka Brennan's (Emily Deschanel) daddy dearest! Max makes his return to the Jeffersonian during Season 7, Episode 11 "The Family In The Feud," and we're in definite need of a refresher about what this old dude's been up to — you know, aside from murdering people and setting them on fire.

Max (who also goes by a bevy of aliases) is Brennan's long-lost pops, but he abandoned her when she was still just a child prodigy. Thanks to Max, Brennan was put in the foster system, and let's just say her plebeian foster parents did not appreciate her bone skills.

So, why did Max leave his family? Because he and his wife, Ruth, were "hit men" who went into hiding to protect their kiddos from their criminal past. Just like Mr. and Mrs. Smith but with abandoned children. Bonus!

Max emerged from his life on the lam to take out the Deputy Director of the FBI, who threatened to kill Brennan's brother, Russ. Since then, Max and Brennan have been bonding all over the place, and she has no problem with the fact that he's a recently retired mass murderer. Of course, Max was put on trial for killing the FBI's main man, but don't worry! Brennan and her nerd squad were on the case, and proved that the Deputy wasn't killed with Max's signature copper pipe — he was killed with one of Brennan's decorative daggers! What, you don't have those?

Last we heard, Max had nabbed himself a job as a science teacher at the Jeffersonian (nepotism, much?), but apparently he'll be entering a new line of work any minute — professional babysitting! Sigh, there's no one better to teach Baby Christine the ways of the world.

What about the guy who plays our favorite serial killer? You might remember Ryan O'Neal from Love Story, but off-screen this dashing gent is most famous for his real-life love affair with Farrah Fawcett. These two were joined at the hip until Farrah died from cancer in 2009, and now Ryan himself is facing stage two prostate cancer. "It's a love story," Ryan told People about his relationship with Farrah. "I just don't know how to play this one. I won't know this world without her. Cancer is an insidious enemy."

We hope Ryan makes a speedy recovery and we welcome him back to Bones!
