And it turns out they had good reason to be. They went into the evening resigned to go home, as they told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview.
“Let’s be realistic,” said Maks. “We make it to the [Dance Duel], we’re out, no matter what we do.” His partner Melissa concurred: “We’re not going to win a dance off,” she said.
Of course, it was actually Jaleel White & Kym Johnson and Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower who wound up being in the bottom two. In the final Duel of the season, the judges deemed Roshon’s Rumba superior, ultimately leading to Jaleel’s elimination. But Maks is still bitter about his own personal relationship with the judges.
“I'm not mad or angry... I was disappointed for a split second and then I snapped back into it," he said. "I think I'm not ever going to do what they like to see. I believe in what I believe in." Which, apparently, is majorly ripped abs and overdosing on spray tanner. Oh, and brilliant dancing!
