January Jones Prefers Fat Betty on Mad Men: “Skinny Betty Was Meaner!”

One of the only shocks so far on Mad Men Season 5 was the first (and last?) sight of Fat Betty. Played by January Jones, Betty has always been rail-thin (she was a former model who traveled to Italy, as she will tell you), which played into her character’s sense of entitlement, and childhood need to please her strict, looks-obsessed mother.

So how is Fat Betty different? January Jones tells Fashionista that she actually prefers the new, plumper, more vulnerable Betty Francis because “Skinny Betty was meaner!”

Yikes! Well, we guess we have to agree with her, based on the very little screen time Bets has gotten so far this season. January also said that she doesn’t mind all the Fat Betty humor across the internet. “I have to think it’s funny; I don’t take offense.”

Fat Betty was created because January Jones was in her third trimester during filming of Season 5. Matthew Weiner & co. used TV-magic to mask January’s baby bump and make her look like she was overweight. Of course, in real life, pregnant January never looked as big as Fat Betty.

January reportedly looks just as thin as ever, only 5 ½ months after giving birth to her son Xander. Which we suppose is good news for Season 6, when Betty will be back to her normal weight and appear more frequently (we hope!)

Watch the next episode of Mad Men on Sunday, May 6 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
