The McKinley High School glee club has grown significantly over these past three seasons — and had so many new members come and go — that we sometimes forget it started off with just five original members.

Back at the very beginning of Glee Season 1, the New Directions was just a small group of five: Rachel (Lea Michele), Mercedes (Amber Riley), Kurt (Chris Colfer), Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), and Artie (Kevin McHale).

Now that senior class graduation is just around the corner, Glee’s original five will take center stage once again in this scene from the upcoming Season 3 finale. Lea Michele tweeted this photo of the five on May 1, saying, “This is how it all began..”

Jenna Ushkowitz quickly followed up by using the photo to create a fun then and now comparison. The top half of her image shows all five back in Season 1 — before any of the football players or cheerleaders ever joined the glee club — and the bottom image shows everyone today.

Just look how much they’ve all changed! Kurt, in particular, has matured from little sophomore to confident senior. Tina ditched the goth look and lightened her hair. (Remember back when Tina was goth? And had a fake stutter? How much time has passed!)

As for Mercedes, she appears to have decided to start straightening her hair and ditch those headbands, while Rachel opted to change up her hairstyle by growing bangs. Not the most shocking of transformations, but still noticeable. Only Artie looks virtually identical to when we first met him!

This photo is just another reminder that Glee’s seniors really are graduating this year. Well, Tina and Artie are still juniors, but the other three are definitely headed away from McKinley.

Oh gosh. We can feel the waterworks starting already. This is going to be such a tearful episode to watch!
