The Avengers Makes Box Office History With $200.3 Million Opening Weekend
Sayonara, Hunger Games; bye-bye, Harry Potter; see ya later, Twilight! The comic book mega-adaptation The Avengershas made serious box office mincemeat of the competition with its incredible opening weekend, pulling a staggering $200.3 million since Friday and marking the biggest three-day U.S. weekend gross ever.
Meanwhile, overseas the flick keeps on picking up storm; since Disney and Marvel made the unusual choice to release the film internationally a week prior to the U.S. release, the film has brought in an incredible $641.8 million worldwide since its initial release. That's a lotta popcorn, folks.
And while expectations were high, even Disney sounds flabbergasted by the incredible success of their film: "Never, ever did we think it would go this high," one executive told The Wrap. "If there was one consistency about this weekend, it was that we kept getting surprised by numbers better than we could have imagined in the best case."
