Earlier in the season, he announced on air that he had underscored Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd after their first dance. This week the head judge told KTLA he felt bad about his low scores for Maria Menounos & Derek Hough’s Week 8 routines. Not that he’s ready to change the scores.
Len told KTLA he was up all night, not about the Viennese Waltz, but about the Bollywood Samba they did for the “Trio” routine.
"Derek as a choreographer is a genius,” Len said. “But I have to maintain the integrity, for me, of ballroom dancing. And as much as I appreciated the cleverness of it, the way it all worked with the three of them, it wasn't a Samba."
He felt what was on the label wasn't in the tin. "But I felt terrible, because I gave them a 7, which I thought was fair as that fact was concerned — but then I get home and I feel like a swine."
He was asked if he could go back and change the Samba score, would he go for another number? Len said, "If [Maria] goes home tonight, I will think in part like it's my fault, which will make me feel terrible, because over the weeks that she’s been on, she doesn’t deserve to go. But I think it was a 7 because it wasn’t a Samba. But I wish somehow I’d have been able to give it an 8.”
