Alexis Bledel on Her Mysterious Mad Men Character, Beth Dawes: Is She “Unstable”?

We’re still getting used to the idea of Alexis Bledel, aka Rory Gilmore, playing recurring character Beth on Mad Men, but Alexis is already revealing a lot about Beth’s connection to Pete (Vincent Kartheiser). How strong is it, really?

Alexis tells Slate that Mad Men creator (and the writer of Season 5, Episode 8: “Lady Lazarus") Matthew Weiner told her, “[Beth]’s still living the life of a ’50s housewife. She hasn’t really moved into the ’60s, because she’s trapped in her marriage ... I think she identifies with the despair in Pete, and that’s why they connect so strongly right away.”

As for the brief mutual adultery on her livingroom floor, Alexis says she still doesn’t know why Beth did it. “She’s told him, ‘Think about me, and fantasize about what we had, and I will, but don’t call me.’ She’s kind of torturing him. It means so much to Pete in that moment, but then she just takes it away.”

We're excited that our initial inability to figure Beth Dawes out (an inability shared by Pete) means we have no idea what to expect from her. There are hints that she is unstable, including her disappearance from dinner after kissing Pete with her husband a few feet away. Also, hints that she’s not especially good at playing housewife — particularly when she tells Pete she might run into Trudy (Alison Brie) at the supermarket, if she ever went.

As Alexis put it, “He has no idea what’s going on in this woman’s mind, and neither does the audience. He doesn’t know if she’s a stable person, or if she’s going to hurt him or please him or anything, really.” Make that millions of us. Just the way we like our inscrutable Mad Men characters.

Watch the next episode of Mad Men on Sunday, May 13 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on AMC.
