Clay Aiken Calls North Carolina’s Amendment Against Same-Sex Marriage “Irresponsible”

American Idol Season 2 runner-up Clay Aiken is known for being private about his personal life, but a political shakeup in his home state has prompted him to speak up.

In North Carolina, where Clay currently lives with his son, the public is voting today on whether to pass Amendment 1, which would change the state’s constitution to say that the marriage between a man and a woman would be the only type of union legally recognized in the state. Clay appeared on CNN earlier today to voice his opposition to the amendment, pointing out that many people in North Carolina don’t fully understand the repercussions of the measure.

“It restricts domestic partnership, it restricts civil unions for both straight and gay couples,” said Clay to CNN’s Brooke Baldwin. This would complicate things like shared benefits and child custody between non-married couples, whether they are same-sex or opposite sex.

He also added that the state already has a ban on same-sex marriage in place, making the amendment redundant but also hurtful for straight couples who will face changes if it is passed.

“This is the only example in my lifetime really of the state taking a very irresponsible step,” said Clay.
