Why Did David Clarke Give Amanda His Journals on Revenge?

Near the end of Revenge episode 20, "Legacy," Amanda Clarke wept on the phone to Nolan Ross as she described meeting her father's one true friend, Roger Halsted, and how he had committed "suicide" (read: was murdered by Grayson security head Frank Stevens).

She finally realized that her father had been betrayed by his friends and his lover, Victoria Grayson — and she was going to make them all pay.

Nolan tried to argue against seeking vengeance. "He wanted you to get past all this," he counseled.

"Then why did he give me his journals?" Amanda shot back, to which Nolan had to answers.

Which led us to wonder ... why did David Clarke give his daughter those journals? Did he truly want her to "let it go"? He must've known that reading about the epic betrayal he suffered might trigger retaliation.

Then again, in flashbacks, David has proven to be a very naive, trusting man.

Or perhaps David Clarke meant for his daughter to prove his innocence and take down the Graysons.

What do you think?
