Grey’s Anatomy Death Watch: Why Lexie Grey Might Die in the Season 8 Finale

With the Grey's Anatomy Season 8 Finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight") just days away, and more clues coming in about who will die, we’ve started seriously wondering if Lexie (Chyler Leigh) will be the one who doesn’t survive the plane crash.

Warning: This post contatins updates with spoilers about the finale. Turn back now if you don't want to know!

We’ve already taken a closer look at why Derek (Patrick Dempsey) might not survive the finale, but judging by the newest promos, he’s not the only doctor in jeopardy. Lexie definitely doesn’t look so good in the aftermath of the plane crash. Here are a few reasons why Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) half-sister might be saying the long goodbye.

Lexie is disastrously injured in the plane crash. The most obvious clue that Lexie doesn’t survive lies in the promos. In the most recent extended version, we see Lexie’s head covered in blood as she lays on her side. Her eyes slowly close, as she appears to be stuck under some heavy wreckage. Could they be closing for good?

“Bittersweet.” Last month, show creator Shonda Rhimes said that Mark (Eric Dane) and Lexie will get some satisfaction, but she also said something a bit nerve-wracking: “I think they’re going to get some satisfaction … I cannot say that it’s not going to be bittersweet or painful. That’s all.” Yikes. Knowing what we know, we’re nervous that what might go down is Mark trying his hardest to save Lexie. They both exchange heartfelt, sobbing “I love you” speeches, and then her eyes close. That would definitely qualify for bittersweet and painful.

One Grey is most likely safe. Ellen Pompeo recently signed a new contract securing her role on Grey’s Anatomy for the next two years, so we are 99% sure that Meredith will survive the crash. As sad as it sounds, Lexie’s death could provide the impetus to get Mer on board with moving to Boston with Derek and Zola. In last week’s episode (Season 8, Episode 23: "Migration"), Meredith did say that the only real connection she had to Seattle was her sister. Also, a big part of Mer’s character has always been carrying on the Grey legacy. If she’s the only Grey left, that puts all the pressure squarely on her shoulders, which would be a nice full-circle return to Season 1 story arcs.

Lexie’s sphere of influence is relatively small. Ever since Lexie and Jackson (Jesse Williams) ended things, Lexie hasn’t had much to do with other main characters on the show. Sure, she’s getting along with Derek more like a brother than a minion, but her epiphany about Mark being her soulmate is a little too late. Other than that, she’s Zola’s babysitter. Not too many people (other than Mer) will be seriously affected if she dies.

Do you think Lexie will be the one to go? Share your theories in the comments.

UPDATE (CAUTION SPOILERS): We were onto something with this one. Lexie was indeed the doctor who died in the Season 8 finale.

Catch the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, May 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
