Grey’s Anatomy Death Watch: Why Arizona Robbins Might Die in the Season 8 Finale

In anticipation of the Grey's Anatomy Season 8 finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"), here at Wetpaint Entertainment we're obsessively trying to figure out which characters are most likely on the chopping block. So far, we've pondered Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) possible departure, as well as Lexie's (Chyler Leigh). Now we turn our attention to another fan fave we'd hate to see go: Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw).

We want to believe Shonda couldn't possibly kill off the radiant Arizona, but we can't help but notice clues that makes it seem like she is in danger. Here's why.

She's in a bad situation: Arizona seems to be in bad shape after the plane crash, based on the first preview of the episode.

Shonda won't talk about Calzona: Shonda has refused to talk about what happens to Calzona in the finale. Is it because Arizona's death is the central surprise?

Callie voiceover: In this new preview of the episode, Callie (Sara Ramirez) has taken the voiceover reins from Meredith (Ellen Pompeo). Other characters normally only voiceover when something big is happening to them or someone they love.

It's a game changer: As much as we hate the idea, Arizona's death would shake up the narrative quite a bit. First, it would give Callie (Sara Ramirez) a lot to do next season, and it would inevitably impact Mark's (Eric Dane) life in a big way, too, since he would presumably step up as Callie's best friend and the father of her child. That, in turn, would throw another wrench in his romantic life with Lexie (Chyler Leigh) or Julia.

On top of that, Arizona's death might give Alex (Justin Chambers) a reason to stay, to help the Seattle Grace-Mercy West Pediatrics department, maybe even in a leadership role.

Her recent arc: Arizona's arc in the last few episodes ended with her demanding Callie promise never to leave her. Wouldn't it be ironic if she died, leaving Callie behind, the very next episode?

Jessica on Twitter: Jessica Capshaw was one of the first cast members to go to Twitter and tell her followers not to freak out about the finale. Could it be because she knows her fans will be the most upset out of everyone?

Jessica's pregnant again: Working on Grey's seems like a great environment for parents, but with another baby on the way, is it possible that Jessica actually wants to leave the show to focus on her kids?

It would be very, very sad: A lot of fuss has been made about how sad the finale is, and how beloved the departing character is. Arizona is definitely well liked by fans, and we can think of nothing sadder than a character who finally has everything she wants meeting an untimely end.

We really, really hope we're wrong on this one, because it would break our hearts. What do you think: Is Arizona safe, or should we be worried?

Catch the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, May 17 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
