Bones Showrunner Stephen Nathan Talks Season 8: “A More Intense Situation”

We know the body’s not even cold on Bones Season 7 yet, but that doesn’t stop us from being insanely curious as to what lies ahead for Brennan (Emily Deschanel), Booth (David Boreanaz) and the whole Jeffersonian team in Bones Season 8. Executive producer Stephen Nathan recently talked with Assignment X about all things Bones, and his giddiness about Season 8 was palpable. Asked whether he was excited about an eighth season he says, “ Absolutely, no question about it. I’m chomping at the bit.” So are we!

Cliffhanger finales aside, it seems like things are really set to change next season on Bones now that both Brennan and Booth, and Angela (Michaela Conlin) and Hodgins (TJ Thyne) have babies. Will there be a shift in the shape and scope of the show? Stephen says, “Not really. Bones is always going to be a procedural. It’s always going to be a lot of murders, it’s always going to be a lot of investigations and the relationship between Booth and Brennan.” He adds, “So the fact that they have families now, Booth and Brennan as well as Angela and Hodgins, is just kind of icing on the cake. It’s never going to be the cake itself.”

Given the show’s low-key reveal that Booth and Brennan had slept together, it makes sense that their romance wouldn’t take center stage this nor would Baby Christine’s arrival change what works about Bones. Stephen explains, “We wanted to keep the dynamics of the show the same. So now they just have a more intense situation [the baby] to disagree about … And it takes us into a whole new area. Not only with Booth and Brennan, but with Angela and Hodgins, with Booth’s family, with her family. It’s a big change.”

We can’t wait to see what kind of changes Season 8 brings!
