American Idol

Jimmy Iovine Critiques the American Idol 2012 Top 3: Who Does He Say Is “the One to Beat”?

American Idol mentor Jimmy Iovine not only had a hand in choosing three of tonight’s nine songs for the Top 3 contestants Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez, and Phillip Phillips but he’s also found time to share his studied viewpoints on Season 11’s remaining contestants.

In a new interview with TV Guide, Jimmy ran through some of the Top 3’s strengths and weaknesses.

Regarding Phillip, Jimmy’s practically read our minds! He said he hopes that Idol’s lady killer, who is undoubtedly talented and has a way with fans, will “freshen up” and “come up with a clever idea, song-wise.” We predicted Phillip might’ve been the one to add John Lennon’s “Imagine” to the list for tonight, but we’ll have to wait to see if it’s true. If so, is that choice “clever” enough by Jimmy (and America)?

As for Jessica, Jimmy noted that she’s “probably the best technical singer” and has always been considered “the one to beat.” But he thinks that she should go a little younger with her music once in awhile. After all, the girl is only 16! But judging by tonight’s song list, she’ll be keeping her soul sister-ness going for at least another round.

Finally, Jimmy says that no one should be overlooking Joshua’s accelerated improvement over the course of Season 11. “Every week, [he] gets better and better at performance and feeling the record.” With all of that momentum behind him, Jimmy says, “Joshua's just got to hold on and not blow it.”

Needless to say, with only three left, the competition is fierce. These mentees better be taking notes!
