Girls Season 2 Starts Filming Scenes With Lena Dunham and Donald Glover (PHOTO)
Just last week, Girls creator Lena Dunham defended her show’s lack of diversity on NPR by saying that she writes what she knows, and that she “wanted to avoid tokenism.” Of course, that approach has been maligned in the press by critics who believe Girls is “too white,” and fails to represent a realistic portrayal of social circles in New York because there are no minorities in starring roles.
Well! Judging by this photo taken of Lena in the first few days of filming Girls Season 2, it seems like either Lena’s artistic philosophy has changed dramatically in the last year, or she took the criticism to heart. Community’s Donald Glover, who we also loved as a writer for 30 Rock, was spotted filming scenes with Lena for the sophomore season.
Do you think Lena just caved under the pressure to feature more African-American characters? Or will Donald’s skin color not even factor into his Girls character? In either case, it seems like an awfully big coincidence that Lena would shoot scenes with a black actor in the very first few days of filming her next season.
We love Donald anyway, so we’re just happy he’s on the show. But we’re a little unnerved by the timing of his appearance. That’s all.
Catch the next episode of Girls on Sunday, May 20 at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT onHBO.
