So You Think You Can Dance Season 9 Will Feature Two Winners!
Get ready to crown America's Favorite Dancers — plural!
This season on So You Think You Can Dance, there will be two performers left standing at the end of the competition — one guy and one girl — a change executive producer Nigel Lythgoe thinks will level the playing field.
“Girls dance totally differently than guys,” he told TV Line, also pointing out that double the winners means double the fun.
Another big change in Season 9 is that show will air only one night per week in a two-hour time slot. So how will eliminations work?
The first live show will feature only performances. Then, the next week, the results of America's vote will be revealed — but not until after the dancers compete with their week 2 routines, to prevent them from panicking as they perform.
Dancers will receive critiques from the judges, and learn if they were in the bottom three in the voting from the previous week.
At the end of the evening, the at-risk contestants will then be asked to "dance for their lives."
Ultimately, the decision to keep them in the competition is up to Nigel and his fellow judges. Mary Murphy, aka the Queen of Scream, will return to the panel, and Adam Shankman's old seat will remain open for celebrity guest judges (most likely to return are Christina Applegate, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Kristin Chenoweth).
Don't worry about the fun group numbers, guest performers, and top-notch choreographers — all of the things we've come to know and love about SYTYCD will return to our small screens when the show premieres on Thursday, May 24 at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
