Community Showrunner Dan Harmon Gets Replaced

Community fans have just begun celebrating news of the much-loved cult comedy's renewal, but things are looking stormy at Greendale, with yesterday bringing news that show runner Dan Harmon — who is largely regarded as the genius behind the show's quirky humor — was replaced as show runner by seasoned TV writers David Guarascio and Moses Port. Earlier today, Harmon spoke out about his replacement, with a blog post explaining the reality of his ending duties on Community.

Harmon writes that he found out on the news that he was being replaced ("I've been in as much contact with [Sony] as you [readers] have," he says), explaining that he hasn't been called since the show was picked up for Season 4. "Community is their property," he says.

As for the claims that he is technically "signed on" to be a consulting producer on the show? "A relatively standard protective clause for a creator in my position," he says. "Guys like me can't actually just be shot and left in a ditch by Skynet," so he says he'll stay on the show "sharpening pencils and stuff." If he did attempt to take a more involved role with the show, he writes, "I wouldn't have any power there… I would be 'offering' thoughts on other people's scripts, not allowed to rewrite them, not allowed to say whether a single joke was funny or go near the edit bay, etc." Bluntly, he says, "I'm not running Community for season 4. They replaced me. Them's the facts." Ouch.

With Dan Harmon's signature style absent from the show, fans are already in an uproar — so can the show even survive without him? Sound off in the comments and tell us: Will you keep watching Community without Harmon on board?
