DWTS Judges’ Choice: Season 14 Finalist Aim to Perfect These Past Routines Tonight

Everything old is new again as the final three competitors of Dancing With the Stars Season 14 re-dance past routines tonight on night one of the Finals.

The three judges will probably do their usual thing — each one will visit a final couple in rehearsals, tell them which dance they want them to re-do and give them pointers on what they need to improve. They used to call this the “redemption dance.”

The couples are allowed to incorporate new music and new choreography, so it’s not like they have to be slavishly faithful to what they did before. Still, what they did before is the foundation, so here’s what each of the final three couples will be dancing tonight (in addition to the Freestyle routines) and how the dances looked the first time.

Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd
Judges’ choice: Argentine Tango, from Week 5
Original score: 10, 8, 9 = 27 out of 30

As Donald tweeted, "The dances this week are freestyle and the judges pick. They pick Argentine Tango. So it will be crazy."

You remember their Argentine Tango, yes? It was amazing. Those lifts! Carrie Ann Inaba gave it a 10. Len Goodman gave a record-scratch-worthy 8, saying the lifts were spectacular, but the rest of it was nearly but not quite. Bruno Tonioli balanced it out with a 9. If Donald and Peta can perfect this to what Len wants, it *could* earn them three 10s. At the very least, it’s a great crowd-pleasing routine to give fans on the last night they can vote.

Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas
Judges’ choice: Paso Doble, from Week 4
Original score: 8, 8, 8 = 24 out of 30

"The first time we did it it was a little hectic," Mark told Access Hollywood. "It was hard because it was Rock Week and it's such a classical dance. So it was kind of hard to mesh the two. I thought we did a good job but the judges were right — she was kind of wild and kind of like [shakes head]." Katherine said she let the cool, trying-to-be-aggressive side run away with her. "It's going to be nice to re-look at it and just trying and be a little bit more contained," she said.

At the time, Bruno said Katherine threw her arms around like Storm in X-Men but it wasn’t as clean, precise and defined as a Paso should be. Carrie Ann said Katherine kept re-adjusting her feet, which she didn’t do before. It was still pretty, though. Len said it had promise but didn’t quite deliver. Blame it on the cage!

William Levy & Cheryl Burke
Judges’ choice: Cha-Cha-Cha, from Week 1
Original score: 8, 8, 8 = 24 out of 30

As Cheryl tweeted on Sunday, "Productive day! Judges picked the Cha Cha for us to dance again. Excited for Monday. Can't believe the end is near."

Interesting that they were given their very first routine to re-do. Maybe it’s because William and Cheryl got a late start to the season, thanks to his work schedule. This is the dance that made Bruno stand up and shout “Ladies and gentlemen, Dancing With the Stars presents the hottest package of the season! … By the way, William, you’re overdressed. Less clothing.” Maybe this time he will show less clothing. Carrie Ann thanked ABC for her job and said she likes the way William moves. Len said he captured the spirit of the Cha-Cha-Cha, dancing on the edge but keeping control.

The judges didn’t have anything too negative to say, but it was Week 1 so it’s not like they were going to give out 10s. It’s possible Cheryl will just add more content for William and then just let him do his thing again.
