The Bachelorette

In Defense of The Bachelorette’s Kalon McMahon

Kalon McMahon is getting the Contestant Everyone Else Hates edit on The Bachelorette Season 8 — like he’s the next Justin “Rated-R” Rego or Courtney Robertson. But why?

What if he’s really more of an eccentric intellectual like Season 7’s Ames Brown? What if he’s just misunderstood like The Bachelor 15’s Michelle Money? Or just disliked for no legit reason, like Season 7’s Ryan “Mr. Sunshine” Park and “man code” violating Juan Barbieri of Season 5?

Yeah, there’s a hint of *bad things to come* with Kalon, but at this point, it feels like the guys on Emily Maynard’s season don’t like him because … the season needs a “villain” for drama. They don’t like that he flew in on a helicopter — Stevie even nicknamed him “Chopper,” which actually sounds kind of cool — and he uses big words. He’s not part of the frat and he’d (gasp!) rather hang out with Emily than the other guys. Imagine!

• Sean: “Kalon has this air about him and I get the impression he uses his vocabulary as a way of trying to show his dominance within the household.”
• Stevie: “Just the way he talks. He seems like a rich kid and stuck up.”
• Wolf: “I have a rule. If you have Louis Vuitton luggage and you’re a dude, you’re an asshole.”

Everyone thinks he’s making more enemies than friends. But why? Yeah, Kalon made a fuss after Aaron Martell stole Emily away from him — right after he himself stole Emily from Stevie — but at least Kalon was gracious about taking the burden of choice away from Emily. He was smooth about letting Aaron win. Phony/smooth, maybe, but he’s hardly the only guy saying just what Emily wants to hear. He was raised to be a gentleman, not confrontational. He also feels he’s an old man trapped in a young man’s body. And he finds himself to be eloquent, which he may want to rethink since he’s already put his foot in his mouth a couple of times — with the other guys and also in announcing on the premiere that he used to be an obnoxious womanizer.

But when it comes to Kalon vs. Stevie, we’re with Kalon. Why did Stevie announce he didn’t like Kalon? You just met the guy. Seemed rude and uncalled for. And was Kalon really so out of line when talking to single dad Doug Clerget by the pool? Doug was making his own big speech about how the guys should be ready in their hearts to be parents.

Doug: "I can guarantee you there's nothing more important in Emily's heart than Ricki 'cause there's nothing more important in my heart than my son Austin."

Kalon: "At the same time, you are here. You made the decision to put that on hold. And obviously we all respect that..."

Doug: "Did you just say I made the decision to put being a dad on hold?"

Kalon: "Yeah."

Doug: "Wow. Be really careful. Just back up and apologize."

Kalon: "I'm sorry if you misunderstood..."

Doug asked if Kalon feels like Emily put being a mom on hold. No, Kalon began, before being cut off again by Doug's latest "Stop right there. Just check it."

Sean said Kalon had no right to say anything to Doug about being a father. But all Kalon was doing was mentioning the fact that Doug had taken some time away from home to tape The Bachelorette, as a way of finding love. And he was about to talk further about how they respected the decision ... before Doug got upset and cut him off. Doug may have just legitimately misunderstood Kalon’s intentions, reading too much into “put that on hold” when Kalon wasn’t saying Doug didn’t care about being there for his son. Kalon apologized if Doug misunderstood but since Kalon is a safe target to attack, no one seems to want to hear the context of what he’s saying. He’s just “the bad guy” and that’s it.

What do you think about Kalon? Are you already seeing him as bad news or just misunderstood? Maybe he’s not the best match for Emily — and he’s clearly not a good match for the Season 8 bachelors — but does he deserve the frat pack dissing?
